Yosemite HDR

HDR or High Dynamic Range Photography is all the rage right now. In fact, just this weekend the Digital Photography School Blog featured a post regarding the mixed opinions on HDR. HDR images are created by taking a series of photographs with the only variable being the shutter speed. This series is then blended together in Photoshop or another post-processing program. I have seen some HDR images that I really like and so last weekend in Yosemite I decided to take photographs with the purpose of trying out this technique.

This image is composed of five photographs “blended” together in Photoshop (Exposures are -2, -1, 0, +1, and +2). I’m not sure I like the result of this particular HDR image and don’t know if the scene is just not appropriate for this technique. Given the fact that creating an HDR image is pretty labor-intensive I think I’ll be a little more picky before trying this technique again.

Fire Falls

Over the weekend, I finally got to see the rainbow form on Bridalveil Fall. I had heard of this phenomenon and had seen photographs taken during the event, but had never seen it in person. Luckily, I was with Gary Hart, who is a wealth of information on capturing the beauty of Yosemite National Park on ‘film’. Gary had us set up at Tunnel View just in time to see the rainbow form on the falls. While this is not the ‘old-school’ firefall in Yosemite, I think it is appropriate for the Fire challenge this week at Photo Friday. Hope you enjoy it!

Road Trip Songs

There has been a couple of comments in the C!nder Rocks post regarding songs that should be included on my ‘Road Trip’ playlist. As background, about a month ago I started putting together a playlist of road trip songs. Some songs are just loud to pump you up during the long drive, others songs are about different locales I will drive through on my trip, and others are just songs about being on the road.

I’m curious to know, what would be your top 5 (or so) road trip songs? In no particular order, here are my five:

1. I Can See for Miles - The Who

2. On the Road Again - Willie Nelson

3. Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf

4. Drive My Car - The Beatles

5. Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots

Rusty’s First Trip

Rusty (he’s officially been named) made his first trip to Yosemite this weekend and survived with flying colors. This photo of him was taken at Washburn Point, with Half Dome and Nevada Falls in the background. I know the shadows are a little harsh, but it was the best I could do under the circumstances. More photos of Yosemite to come later this week!

C!nder Rocks!

On Second Saturday I was gifted with a going away present from the always awesome C!nder. It’s one of his cute little monsters that will serve as my version of the Amelie garden gnome on my summer travels. It’s such an awesome present (and SOO much better than a gnome) and I’m giddy with excitement. It’s going on a trial-run this weekend with me and my Pops to Yosemite. Tales of its first travel will be appear upon our return….

As you can tell, I haven’t settled on a name for him yet (definitely a boy). So if you want to add any names to the pot, let me know!

Second Saturday

One of the many things I will miss about Sacramento is Second Saturday. Last night while out and about for Second Saturday, I captured this shot of two art bikes we saw cruising around. I’m not sure if it totally works but there is something about it I really like. Anyone else have an opinion?

Secret

I had a really hard time with this week’s Photo Friday theme “My Little Secret”. Rather than my usual method of creating an image specifically to fit the theme, I pulled this photo out of the archives. I shot it a couple of weeks ago, but never got around to processing it. One of my favorite lazy day activities is to walk along the railroad tracks, look for random objects, and then make up stories of how they arrived in that spot. In my mind, the railroad tracks are this secret little corridor through town where all kinds of clandestine activities take place.

Electricity

Last night Donnie, John, Mark, and I went to the park and had some fun. Thanks to Sara for providing the sparklers and to the boys for running around the playground with the sparklers, especially since each of them maimed themselves in the process.
